Behind the Product: As I Am Tee

This is my debut tee under my brand, On Mamas!

The woman on the shirt is Jade, a modern day Asian American warrior. I came up with the concept during the pandemic. Week after week the hatred against Asians escalated and like most of my family and friends, I felt hopeless and afraid. My community needed something to believe in so I created Jade.

I modeled her after Rosie the Riveter with an Asian twist in hopes to inspire my people to stay strong and embrace our culture. I added some fun details to tell a little about myself. The character, 陳, on her neck is my last name, Chan. A friend of mine once said, “If you’re proud of something, put your name on it,” so there it is. The “Mama” tattoo on her arm is an homage to my grandmother who raised me. She’s my favorite person in the world and the mama behind On Mamas!

Jade glows with confidence. Her clothing is casual, comfortable, and sexy. It’s freeing without revealing too much. She looks bad ass. She’s tough and feminine. Sassy and strong. Resilient and brave. She represents Asian Americans who stand up for our right to be here.
